Monocle Demo Game: Overview

(1/9) > >>

Alec:
So I'm thinking we can take Matt's idea for a world map select screen and have it so that each area is a different type of game.

That way we could show off the flexibility of the engine, as well as different styles of areas etc.

Ideas so far:

Space Shooter
Monocle man is flying a retro-styled fighter - would be cool if everything he uses is made out of spare parts / built by himself.
Could be top down or side view... top down may be more refreshing? (a la 1942)

Adventure
We could base this on the frozen submarine. Maybe the Monocle man is investigating it. We could build simple movement and inventory interfaces, and have a few nice looking areas and puzzles to solve. :)

Could use the fringe tile editor for this one.

Platformer
We could turn our current Ogmo demo into a Monocle-man themed game perhaps.

This one could use the fixed size Tile Editor.

Beat-Em-Up
Not sure what this is yet. Final Fight or River City Ransom style?

Action RPG
Could be a very simple (anyone remember QBasic MiniRPG?) game where Monocle man has to venture into a randomly generated dungeon. Basic inventory and simple combat. (Zelda 3 view?)

Levels could be procedurally generated.

How we do...
Our plan is to build this game using our editor tools and whatever main scripting language we end up choosing. The project and its content would be hosted on github as a separate, public project.

We're gonna need help with brainstorming, concept art, coding, in-game art assets, music, sounds etc. :)

Music
It'd be cool to have a base Monocle man theme... and write different variations for each game. Maybe we could even have different composers do the different variations (Josh, Danny, Rich, Marlon, Matt, me? :o)

Alec:
Well, I split this topic in the wrong way.

Oops!

I know ak replied liking the River City Ransom idea. It'd be cool if he wanted to come up with an art style for the city background. (and maybe we could procedurally generate part of it, or even randomize bg buildings)

Also Matt likes these ideas too, lol.

ak:
Ahah cool :) That makes me think we should start thinking about Monocle Man's big enemy. Maybe think about what Monocle Man stands for (creativity, sharing etc) and imagine who could be the villains in such a universe. If we make a beat em up, we need to design the asses Monocle Man will kick :)

Yeah... I was wondering if the enemy could be some kind of mass manufactured thing, like robots.

Then the fact that the Monocle guy is a mechanic could explain why he's the one fighting them. He knows how they work, so he can take them apart?

Maybe his moves aren't so much beating things up as using tools. Like using a wrench to "unscrew" bolts... etc

ak:
But where's the fun in non-violence ? :D
